since my last post...

  1. i woke up thursday with a bad cold. judged the science fair anyways. used 1/2 a box of kleenexes there in 2.5 hours.cancelled a bunch of things like tutoring and piano lessons on thursday night so i could rest. i was very grouchy too.babysat friday. tried my best not to make the kids sick.
  2. saturday we had 3 awesome friends come over in the morning for breakfast then they helped dave work on the house. the vents for the plumbing in the new bathroom, etc, etc. one of them, justin, a high schooler, actually stayed all day and helped us, on his own free will. what an awesome guy! and then his dad bought us a shop vac because he thought we really needed one. we have been so incredibly blessed by this family. they are so nice to us!
  3. dave's dad and his brother in law rod came out sat afternoon. they promptly started working on the house as well. i was blown away by how much rod got done this weekend. he is so efficient and so awesome at remodeling! david was so thankful for a lot of his advice too.
  4. my job when we have guys over helping Dave is to cook good food. So we ate incredibly good this weekend. Here are a few things we had: scrapple and homemade bread with jam, homemade donuts, stromboli and salad, brownies, egg casserole, venison roast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, homemade bread and butter, oatmeal cake, barbecue venison sandwiches on homemade buns, salad,  garlic mashed potatoes, toasted turkey and cheese sandwiches, chips and salsa, more oatmeal cake! I probably gained 5 lbs.
  5. sunday night dave was nailing a stringer between 2 studs for the shower head and when the nail gun went off, it moved a bit and shot the nail right on the corner of the stud and it bounced off and into his left index finger which was almost a foot away. we are amazed at God's protection. it could have bounced off and hit him in the head or the eye or who knows what, but it hit in his finger. and it somehow missed the bone, the tendon, the nerve and the artery. all the important stuff.
  6. apparently, when it happened, dave just said "ow" in a normal voice...then he asked for the camera. so i heard Phil yell, "Katie, come quick! Bring the camera!" and then "Dave shot a nail all the way thru his finger". I thought to myself, "These guys are crazy!!!" Dave found the camera himself, took a pic, then went in the bathroom, pulled the nail out himself, and then washed his hand with peroxide and went back to work. Rod, Phil and I finally urged him to go to the ER at least to get a tetanus shot... but since his copay for the ER is $150, he just went in, asked a nurse how long he had before tetanus would set in. She said 72 hours so he said, "Ok. I'll come back tomorrow to the urgent care." So we went yesterday, the doctor and nurse were both amazed that he didn't feel more pain, etc., etc. He said the tetanus shot (which came with whooping cough vaccine already mixed in and he couldn't elect not to get...hhhhh) made his arm hurt worse than his finger did with the nail in it. And they gave him an antibiotic to take to ward off infection, but he doesn't really want to take it. He is...but somewhat relucuctantly.
  7. Shortly after the doctor visit we were back home and Phil was asking me for the vacuum. I went and got it out of the closet and noticed that heating oil was leaking (well, kind of pouring) out of the furnace, which was running at the time (and had been running a lot this weekend since Phil had cranked our heat up higher than we normally keep it...Dave joked that his dad helped finish the thing off, but seriously, it was just a matter of time, and not at all his fault).
  8. So, we called our friend who does HVAC (the guy who just gave us the shop vac 2 days before) and he had another friend come out and look at the old furnace. These guys have both been telling us for the past couple years to replace it. But we didn't see any point when it was still running. Well, this time, it is unrepairable. It will work, but the insides of it are rusting apart and if we turn it back on, we run the risk of this liner inside that is soaked in heating oil and should not be, catching on fire and not being able to put the fire out. Nice...so we are heating the house with various space heaters (3 of which were provided by this same friend and another friend from church). What we would do without our friends from church, we have no clue! It is about 55-60 degrees last time I checked. A little chilly, but not totally unbearable. We normally keep our house around 64 so it's really not that big a difference.
  9. It looks like we are going to get a propane furnace to replace this one since there are reasons that other options will not work in the house, or financially, right now. Not sure how long it will take to get all this set up. But we are just once again amazed at God's protection. Not only did He allow me to see the leak and shut off the furnace, but He did not let our house burn down. And then He has provided us with a friend who is helping us to get a really good deal on the furnace in exchange for Dave working on his truck. Also praising God that we still had just enough money in our emergency fund after paying the midwife to pay for the new furnace.
  10. Another thing is this whole weekend turned out to be more expensive than planned (with Lowe's trips, the urgent care and pharmacy, etc.) and we weren't sure how we'd pay for all that. But then last night Dave went to a church mtg. and was reimbursed for materials we bought for FPU. Enough to cover all the extra expenses from this weekend.
  11. All in all, we have a lot to be thankful for. This weekend was somewhat trying. And it leaves me wondering what is going to happen next. But at the end of it, I still have my husband, he can still feel and move his finger, we have heat, we have food, we have shelter, etc., etc. And it all could have turned out so drastically different.
