widening doorways...

for entertainment these days i've been browsing the archives of the younghouselove website. and i found this fascinating post about widening doorways. i think this is a fabulous way to make a ranch home with narrow doorways and many small rooms seem instantly more open without tearing out all the walls completely.

so of course i began thinking how i could apply this great idea to our home as well. and i came up with one awesome idea. we could have widened this doorway betwen the kitchen and the great room (to the right of the refrigerator). it could have been opened up a couple feet to the left and then when you walk in the front room you could see even more all the way into the back room. see what i'm talking about in the photos below. and of course, disregard the mess as i'm currently making bread in the kitchen and we're living in a construction zone...

however, it is too late in the game to make this dream come true. we already planned out the kitchen to have a cabinet just to the left of this doorway (and that cabinet has already been built with many painstaking hours...)but it really would have opened up all the living spaces in our home. alas, maybe in the next house...
